Job description

West Coast Partnership Development is a trusted partner of the Department for Transport (DfT) who are working towards creating and implementing the operations for High Speed 2 Ltd (HS2). Working to design, develop and mobilise the high-speed service operations which will deliver benefits including more capacity, quicker journey times and a step-change in customer experience.

 

We would like to present an exciting opportunity to join the Fleet & Depots team as Environmental Specialist.

 

This role will have as primary areas of focus being Carbon Emissions, Waste Management, Air Quality, Noise and Vibration and Pollution Control. Reporting to the Product Lead of the IS Sustainable Development Strategy (aka. Head of HS Fleet Technical) you will be working with a select team upon creating, researching and delivering a Sustainability Strategy and Roadmap to West Coast Partnership Development (WCPD).

 

You will support the embedding the rail industry Sustainable Rail Blueprint within this strategy. You will provide your carbon and natural environmental expertise, to the WCPD Integrated Services Sustainable Development Strategy.

 

Typical projects will include:

 

*                Building a Carbon Baseline including Scope 1, 2 and 3 information

*                Creating a Waste Management Process, utilising data to map waste journey, estimate volumes and ensure compliance.

*                Support the development of an Air Quality Improvement Plan, utilising data from key locations and RSSB guidance to inform its development.

*                Support the development of Noise and Vibration Action Plan, taking data from key modelling activities and applying this to impacted neighbours and communities.

*                Work with key stakeholders to understand our biodiversity impact and develop any key plans for this area.

*                Collect and present data in relation to climate change events within the rail industry, analyse and present on where largest impacts might be to the WCPD operation based on data predictions. Work with researchers and academics to model such impacts on operations.

*                Collaborate with designers and operations teams to manage water effectively ensuring compliance with key pollution control legislation.

 

You will be required to work within cross-functional teams, leading where appropriate. You will build a strong network of contacts throughout WCPD and key stakeholders, allowing expertise to input to the process of building the Sustainability Strategy.

 

The key responsibilities of the role include:

 

*                Leading on delivery of sustainability workshops, collecting information and completing both Gap Analysis and Materiality Assessments across the natural environment topics of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint (waste, water, nature and climate change preparation).

*                Providing consultancy support on natural environment for WCPD. This may cover a range of topics such as supporting development of decarbonisation strategies, developing noise and air quality strategies, water and waste management and external reporting.

*                Actively seek out collaborative relationships across the business and key stakeholders to strengthen the development of the Sustainability Strategy.

*                Support the development of key reports to de delivered at regular intervals to the Department for Transport, updating on the overall projects progress and key findings.

*                To support the Group’s Vision, strategy, and Values.

*                To comply with all Group safety policies, and role-model the principles and behaviours of our Be Safe programme.

*                To maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the Group’s objectives and business plans.

*                To establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues throughout the Group, industry and the supply base.

 

The role is based in London and with the requirement for some travel on our network at times. The expectation will be a minimum of 3 days per week in the office. 

 

West Coast Partnership Development

West Coast Partnership comprises two distinct parts – Avanti West Coast and West Coast Partnership Development. Avanti West Coast runs the InterCity West Coast train services from London to north England, north Wales and Scotland. 

Our work in WCPD is focused on developing plans for what the new high-speed services will look like (customer experience), how they will work (railway operations) and how we will start running new services and trains (mobilisation). Over the next 10 years we will develop and implement a programme (HS2 Ltd are building the new railway and associated infrastructure).
