Job description

We have exciting opportunity to join our Scotland Driver Management Team as a Driver Manager.

As a Driver Manager, you will uphold high standards in operational delivery. Applying your mainline train driver proficiency and experience, you will assure the competence of your team of drivers through assessment, proactive and reactive improvement plans, and application of the competency management system. Supporting the safe introduction of new drivers, route, traction and equipment is a key part of this role.

Working closely with Operations Standards, Network Rail and staff representatives, you will look to implement strategies to improve operational safety performance and continually improve driver capability and skills. You will undertake detailed and quality investigation of operational and occupational safety incidents with a focus on establishing causes and implementing recitative actions. Using your skills as an operational practitioner, you will work closely with other teams within Avanti and Network Rail to formulate and deliver initiatives to improve train service performance and resilience.

This is a true operational management role with scope to help us work towards running a robust, safe, reliable railway!

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • Minimum of 3 years' current UK mainline competence as a train driver
  • Detailed knowledge of Avanti West Coast routes, infrastructure, and rolling stock.
  • Understanding of competency techniques and operational risk management.
  • Basic knowledge of HR processes and practices.
  • Familiarity with IT systems such as Microsoft Office applications, TRUST, Bugle, and OTDR analysis.
  • A coaching leadership style and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make decisions based on factual information and excellent listening skills.
  • Experience in leading teams and managing people and processes.

The salary for this role is £75,756 rising to £79,544 after 6 months.

Benefits include:

  • Final salary pension

  • Free travel on Avanti West Coast for you/spouse/partner/dependents

  • 30 days holiday rising by 1 for every completed year of service to a maximum of 37 days (inclusive of bank holidays)

  • 10 free journeys on other First Group Train Operators

If successful with your application you will be placed in a Talent Bank, and offered a role as and when they arise.
